The Summer House Season 10 reunion part one delivered one of the most raw, deeply emotional moments in Bravo history. Newcomer KJ Dillard broke down in tears, revealing a harrowing post-filming mental health crisis that led to a week-long psychiatric hospitalization for self-harm and a life-changing medical diagnosis.

The Weight of Reality TV and Representation

Joining the cast of Summer House in 2025 as the series’s first Black male roommate, the 28-year-old was met with immense fan love. But behind his charming freshman season, KJ was privately battling severe anxiety and deep-seated emotional pain.

“My whole life, I distracted myself and ran away from my issues instead of facing them head-on,” KJ confessed to host Andy Cohen during the May 26 broadcast.

The intense pressure of sudden fame, combined with the profound weight of cultural representation, culminated in a breaking point in the fall after cameras stopped rolling. KJ checked himself into a psychiatric facility, a decision he credits with saving his life.

A Shocking Diagnosis and a Lifeline of Support

While hospitalized, KJ received a formal diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). BPD is a mental health condition characterized by severe emotional dysregulation, intense mood swings, and unstable relationships.

Through the tears, KJ expressed immense gratitude for his Summer House castmates. He revealed that Ciara Miller and Mia Calabrese—whom he now calls his “sisters for life”—were by his side constantly, visiting him nearly every day during his week in the hospital. Co-star Jesse Solomon also visibly choked up on stage, offering immediate comfort and solidarity.

Moving Forward and Breaking the Stigma

After his hospitalization, KJ spent several months in a recovery program focusing entirely on his well-being. Today, he is actively in therapy and taking medication.

“I’m grateful that I’m here alive because I could have not been,” KJ shared, explaining that his choice to be vulnerable on national television is rooted in a desire to help others going through similar dark times.

By speaking out so transparently, KJ Dillard is actively dismantling the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and BPD. Bravo fans across the globe are sending him nothing but love as he continues his healing journey.
