Pawns Go Home
The phrase “pawns go home†is a traditional piece of Big Brother shorthand that means if you’re serving as a pawn. Put up on the block without any real intention of eviction—you’re still taking a huge risk. The line traces back into the game’s vernacular through houseguest chats, diary rooms, exit interviews. And even the Big Brother Wiki: houseguests coined it to summarize the plain truth of the game. That being a pawn often leads right to the exit door.
Pawns
In Big Brother parlance, a pawn is someone nominated by the Head of Household (HOH) not because they’re the real target, but to serve as a buffer. Ideally, the pawn is someone likable or low-threat so that when eviction votes come around, everyone votes for the actual threat instead. It’s a little like chess, where a pawn is the expendable soldier used strategically, hence the nickname.
Trouble is, pawns do sometimes go home. the game is unpredictable, and if someone miscalculates or votes slip, the pawn could be sent packing. Even the HOH’s safest-sounding plan can unravel if the real target wins Power of Veto. or if the house flips votes. That risk has cemented the tenet that “pawns go home.â€
That said, volunteering to be a pawn can be surprisingly savvy. In Big Brother Canada 3, Jordan Parhar selflessly offered himself next to ally Zach Oleynik as pawn—intending to protect the real target. It backfired, but it was a bold play. In the US version’s BB12, Matt offered himself up to take the place of Monet; the plan worked: Monet was evicted while Matt survived . On BB17, John McGuire leaned into perpetual pawn status, earning veto wins and ride-out weeks. He was finally evicted at Final Four—an example of turning pawn into power.
Notable Pawns In BB
As for famous pawn casualties: BB16’s Victoria “Princess Victoria†Rafaeli was nominated a record ten times but survived until the Final Three. Though she never won HOH, and was finally evicted after enduring pawn after pawn. BB25’s Felicia Cannon was first dubbed “ultimate pawn,†nominated eight times with no wins, and was evicted in the Final Four.
Turning to Big Brother 27, the season is still fresh, and no one has officially borne the pawn label… or has been sent off as one. The premiere revolved around mystery roles like Mastermind and the returning legend Rachel Reilly, and a three-nominee format. But no straightforward pawn dynamic was unveiled. That said, with the three-nominee twist, we could very easily see pawns become part of weekly strategy. And someone might end up representing that age-old maxim yet again.
So is pawn-ing a smart move? It depends. Offering yourself up can provide cover, casting doubt on an ally, or exposing bigger threats. But you’re still on the block, where any unexpected vote swing sends you packing. Pawns famously do go home. But if you’re crafty, confident in comp abilities. Or have a solid read on the house, leveraging pawn status can be a bold—and occasionally brilliant—strategy.
Right now, Big Brother 27 is still too early to point to any pawn being targeted. But given the house’s mysterious roles and triple-block structure, expect pawns to start popping up soon. One misstep may just fulfill the ominous adage: “Pawns go home.â€
