MLB Pitcher Tommy John Dies at Age 83

Tommy John, the four-time Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher whose name became synonymous with one of the most transformative medical procedures in sports history, has passed away at his home under hospice care at the age of 83.

John enjoyed a remarkably durable and distinguished 26-year MLB career spanning from 1963 to 1989. He made his major league debut with the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians). He went on to pitch for several iconic franchises, including the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Oakland Athletics, and the New York Yankees, where he eventually retired.

Despite winning 288 career games and earning four All-Star selections (1968, 1978, 1979, and 1980), Tommy John is best known as a pioneer in sports medicine. In 1974, while pitching for the Dodgers, he suffered what was then considered a career-ending injury to his left elbow. Los Angeles team physician Dr. Frank Jobe proposed a revolutionary and experimental ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction, replacing the damaged ligament with a tendon from John’s forearm.

Against steep odds, the procedure was a resounding success. Allowing John to return to the mound and pitch effectively for another 14 seasons.

The landmark surgery was subsequently named “Tommy John Surgery” in his honor. Over the decades, the procedure has saved the careers of thousands of professional and amateur athletes across various sports worldwide. Tommy John is remembered not only for his impressive achievements and longevity on the field. He is also remembered for his enduring legacy as a symbol of resilience and medical innovation in modern athletics.
