Survivor 49: Episode 9 Recap
I hopped on last night’s episode of Survivor 49, and we have officially entered that territory where alliances are cracking, power is shifting, and you can almost taste the paranoia in the air. Let’s unpack the key moments, the standout players, and what I’m looking forward to in the next round.
Survivor 49
They kicked the episode off with a Reward competition: two teams fighting it out. The reward, a fried-chicken dinner (yes, I was thinking Popeye’s too) for the winning four. The fun part of this segment was how food = power in Survivor, and seeing Christina offer her reward to Jowan, who had not eaten since they arrived on the beach.
After the reward challenge, we move into the immunity challenge: one winner each for the men and the women. Steven Ramm took the men’s side, while on the women’s side, it was Savannah Louie who absolutely dominated. The task: hold your feet against a disc, legs extended, last one to not drop their disc wins. Savannah kept shouting to Sophie, “I’m not dropping… I’m not even close,” and then backed it up. It was impressive endurance plus psychological warfare.
Here’s where it gets messy.
The once-unshakeable big alliance, led by Rizo, Savannah, and Soph, remains strong, but cracks are starting to show. They’re the ones pulling the strings this week.
What’s fascinating: Rizo has an idol, everyone knows it, but they didn’t flush it. Instead, they turned their attention to a guy in the middle: Alex Moore. Alex admitted himself: “That’s what I get for playing both sides.”
In that regard, the title of the episode hits hard: “If you’re loyal to all, you’re loyal to none.” Alex’s downfall was less about a smoking gun moment and more about that reputation of being everywhere and nowhere at once.
Meanwhile, the smaller players like Sage and Jawan are trying to find their footing. Jawan in particular seems to be oscillating between playing big and trying to duck the target. The food reward scene gave him some shine, but that also might make him a threat now.
The vote landed on Alex, making him the third jury member. It was not the most shocking boot of the season, but the circumstances around it were telling. Rizo held onto his idol, which showed just how strong his alliance still feels. Instead of flushing his idol or scattering votes, they executed a clean blindside. It revealed the level of persuasion and coordination that the group currently holds.
Alex’s exit felt like a cautionary tale. Being in the middle can work early in the game, but once the merge hits, it paints a target on your back. If you cannot clearly declare where your loyalties lie, someone will eventually pick that for you.
There was a side note: when Sophie returned to camp after the tribal in episode 8. She saw how little her former allies seemed thrilled. Subtle move, but important. If a person comes back from being voted out and your tribe looks at them like “oh you’re still here?” you know they were expecting you to be the one voted out.
Savannah continues to grow into one of the most compelling players this season. Her confidence at the challenge and the influence she carries around camp are raising her stock quickly. Rizo holding onto his idol without fear, signals how comfortably he is sitting in the game. At the same time, the smaller factions at the bottom are getting restless. A shake up feels inevitable, whether that comes from an idol getting forced out or someone making a bold flip in the next vote.
This episode felt like the quiet build up before a major eruption. The storylines are tightening, the alliances are getting thinner, and the decisions are becoming riskier. If the energy from last night is any indication, we’re heading into the most unpredictable stretch of the season.
The next episode of Survivor 49 airs Wednesday at 8 pm ET / 7 pm CT on CBS or stream it on the Paramount + app the next day.
