Big Brother 28: One More Week of Haley?! Seriously?!

Thursday night’s live eviction episode delivered another reminder that in Big Brother, being nominated doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going home. With Barrett, Chuk, and Haley on the block after LaLa’s dramatic Wall victory and Kamu’s decision not to use the Power of Veto, all three nominees had one last chance to save themselves. And unfortunately for those of us who were hoping Haley’s HOH reign had finally come back to haunt her, she did exactly what she needed to do: she won the BB Block Buster and pulled herself off the block.

Big Brother

The BB Block Buster competition was another creative test that required both precision and patience. The nominees had to get five “apples” to land on the center peak of a piece of turf positioned on a game board. Once the apples were successfully placed on the peak, the player then had to use rocks to knock the apples off. It sounds simple enough, but getting all five apples positioned correctly…and then successfully knocking them off…required some serious control and accuracy.

One bad shot

One bad shot could undo the progress a player had worked so hard to build, making every attempt increasingly important. Haley managed to master the challenge when it mattered most, completing the task and winning the BB Block Buster. Her victory pulled her off the block and guaranteed that she would survive another week, leaving Barrett and Chuk to face the house vote.

That put Chuk in a particularly difficult position. He had spent much of the season quietly moving through the game, and I’ve repeatedly found myself wondering when we were finally going to see him make a significant move. Unfortunately, being on the block at the end of a week in which the Red Corner alliance had taken some serious hits left him in a vulnerable position. With Haley now safe, the votes ultimately fell overwhelmingly against Chuk. By a 9–1 vote, Chuk became the fifth houseguest evicted from Big Brother 28, with Haley being the lone vote to evict Barrett.

Chuk’s eviction also says something important about how much the house has changed since LaLa won the Wall. The Red Corner, which once looked like one of the more powerful groups in the game. Now is suddenly in a very different position. Haley survived, but she isn’t exactly walking away from this week with her game completely repaired. She has now been nominated and saved herself, but the fact that LaLa was willing to put her on the block in the first place shows that the relationships she relied on earlier in the game aren’t nearly as secure as she might have hoped.

Player of the Episode

Player of the Episode: Haley Thogmartin. Ugh. I really hate giving her this one, but credit where credit is due. When her game was on the line, Haley won the competition she needed to win. That’s what Big Brother is about. She couldn’t talk her way off the block, so she competed her way off it.

Oops Award: Chuk Anyanwu. He had the opportunity to finally make himself a major factor in the game. But instead he became the fifth person sent home. His quiet approach may have kept him out of the spotlight. But it also left him without enough people willing to fight for him when he needed them most

LaLa’s HOH reign comes to an end, having completely shaken up the house. Haley survives another week. The Red Corner has lost another member, and the power structure looks nothing like it did a week ago. Now, of course, comes the question I really want answered. WHO is going to win the next HOH…and can somebody PLEASE get Haley back on that block?!
