Recently, a first-look photo from an upcoming biopic has surfaced, revealing Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s nephew, embodying the essence of the legendary singer. Jaafar is the son of Michael’s older brother Jermaine and his wife Alejandra Genevieve Oaziaza. They were married from 1995-2003. Jaafar is born in July 1996.
Jaafar is actually a singer and has been doing so since he was 12 years old. He has covered quite an array of artists such as Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke. He also released his own single in 2019 titled ” Got Me Singing.” Jaafar had aslo been in few Jackson projects before which include 2015’s The Jackson’s Next Generation and his uncle Tito’s 2021 video “Love One Another.”
Michael will be Jaafar’s acting debut. In a caption on his Instagram, he wrote, “I’m humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael’s story to life. To all the fans all over the world, I’ll see you soon.”
In a recent statement, producer Graham King said this about Jaafar as far as how he embodies Michael in many ways. He said, “With Jaafar, every look, every note, every dance move is Michael. He embodies Michael in a way that no other actor could.” Director Antoine Fuqua spoke about the artists who were assembled. “We have assembled an incredible team of artists for this project — hair and makeup, costumes, cinematography, choreography, lighting, everything — and some who knew and worked with Michael are reuniting for this film.” He also added what he saw in Michael’s nephew. But most importantly, it’s Jaafar who embodies Michael. It goes beyond the physical resemblance. It’s Michael’s spirit that comes through in a magical way. You have to experience it to believe it.”
The photographer Kevin Mazur who was able to photograph Jaafar said he felt as if he was seeing Michael for the first time. ” When I arrived for my first day on the set of this movie, I was so excited – it was like the first time I went on tour to shoot Michael Jackson. When I walked onto the set, I felt like I’d gone back in time and I was walking into the stadium to shoot the tour. Seeing Jaafar perform, I thought, ‘Wow, it is Michael.
The way he looks and acts, his mannerisms, everything — he’s Michael Jackson. For anyone who didn’t have the chance to see Michael perform live during his lifetime — this is how it was.”
Lionsgate had made the announcement they were working on a biopic about Michael with the screenplay being written by John Logan who also wrote the screenplay for Gladiator, The Aviator and Skyfall.
Antoine Fuqua an earlier statement to Variety stated how excited he was to see Jaafar bringing Michael back to life. ” It’s incredibly exciting to watch Jaafar bring Michael to life. There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar, who has a natural ability to emulate Michael and such great chemistry with the camera.”
Jaafar Jackson will also be joined by other stars of music and film. stars such as Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, Nia Long, and Miles Teller.
Michael will be in theaters April 18, 2025.
