Joanna and Chip Gaines’ share their humorous thoughts on raising Teenagers!
Chip and Joanna Gaines, Reality TV Celebrities, have become household names, known for their hit show “Fixer Upper” and their impeccable design skills. However, in a recent interview with PEOPLE, the couple shed light on a different aspect of their lives – raising teenagers and a preschooler. The couple share, Drake 18, Ella 17, Duke 15, and Crew 5. Chip and Joanna spoke about the realities of parenting teenagers, stating that they are “notorious for compliments.”

Joanna wants her children to feel as normal as possible. She tells PEOPLE, “What we have realized about our kids is, they want to feel as normal as possible. So they don’t ever talk about any of it. I think they love the idea of flying under the radar, and feeling normal.”
“We get that. But maybe they’ll be proud of this one day.” Joanna was referring to the lifestyle that they have been building for the last 20 years. When they started out it was in a small home goods store in downtown Waco.
They now have their own TV network, product lines, books and a hit HGTV show.
Every once in a while their children do let a bit of admiration out for their parents and their projects. At the present time Joanna and Chip Gaines are working on restoring a 33-room boutique hotel which is named 1928. Ella and Emmie was given a sneak peek and what they said really made their mother feel proud.
Joanna recalls the moment and said, “They kept saying, ‘I can’t believe something like this is in Waco. We feel like we’re in New York City’ That was the biggest compliment.
I was like, ‘Ah, they’re finally impressed.’
It felt like a big win.” Chip jumps in on the conversation and adds, “Teenagers aren’t notorious for compliments. I’m sure we’re not the only parents that come home and are like. I wonder it these teenagers even like us, much less are fond of the work we’re doing.” Joanna adds one more thing to the conversation when she said, “They’re working through their own stuff.”
The couple would love if the children followed in their footsteps, there are priorities such as allowing them to discover their own paths. Joanna shared her thoughts on that when she said, “Obviously at some point it’d be so fun to have one or two of our kids work with us, but that’s definitely not what we’re saying out loud to them.”
Chip is really good at saying, ‘You need your own identity. When you’re finished with college, go do some stuff on your own. Learn some stuff. And then if you want to come back years later and teach us, we’re here.”
Raising teenagers can be a rollercoaster ride filled with emotional ups and downs. It is a time when parents must learn to adapt to changing dynamics within the family unit.
Despite the lack of compliments from their teenage children, it is evident that Chip and Joanna have successfully maintained a strong bond with them. Their ability to find humor in everyday situations showcases their resilience as parents.
