The hit reality TV show “Big Brother” has been captivating audiences for the last 25 years with its unique concept of a group of strangers living together in a house, constantly being monitored by cameras and having to adjust their game when new twists are added.
However, despite the opportunity to win a life-changing prize, many houseguests have made critical mistakes that ultimately cost them the game. Here are the top five biggest blunders made by Big Brother contestants.
One common mistake is forming an alliance too early in the game. While alliances can be beneficial for protection and strategy, revealing loyalty too soon can make others suspicious and target you as a threat. Ultimately, when someone spills the beans about an alliance, it puts them, and the entire alliance, on the radar.
Alliance mistakes can also consist of forming a large alliance as well. While the alliance will have the votes, ultimately, they will have to turn on each other to win. Smaller alliances, while they may not have all the votes needed to sway an eviction, can stay close-knit and protect one another to further gameplay.
Another mistake house guests make is failing to adapt to the changing dynamics within the house. If a player is unwilling to change it up, this could be a significant error and cost them the game.
The game evolves rapidly, and those who refuse to adjust their strategies often find themselves left behind or targeted by stronger players. Fans even see that the game can change from season to season, so a player who cannot roll with the punches usually does not last very long in the house.
While cooped up in the house for 90 days with people you don’t know can be isolating to some, others find comfort in the arms of other houseguests. The quickest way to get a target on your back is to engage in a “Showmance”.
There are houseguests that admittedly come on the show with full intentions of engaging in a Big Brother relationship. Rarely do these relationships make it past the Big Brother Doors, however, there are a few successful showmances still alive and well today.
Is this really a game mistake? I think it has been for some players who hooked up in the house. Others may say they got more than the prize money. I’ll let you decide what you think.
Underestimating the importance of social relationships is detrimental. Building genuine connections with other houseguests not only helps secure votes but also creates trust and loyalty that can be crucial in later stages of the game.
I am not saying that you have to be a BFF but it is crucial to play an intelligent social game. Sometimes those players are called “floaters” but good social player knows how to play both sides of the house without getting a target on their back.
When a player ends up making emotional decisions instead of strategic ones is a grave mistake. Letting personal feelings cloud judgment often leads to impulsive moves that backfire and harm one’s chances of winning.
When a player has their eye on one single target out of spite or a vendetta, that decision usually does not go well and ultimately results in their own eviction.
Disregarding jury management is a fatal error. The jury consists of previously evicted houseguests who ultimately decide the winner. Failing to maintain positive relationships with these individuals can result in losing their votes and ultimately losing the game.
Most of the time the jury will vote for who played the strongest competition, but there is a part of the vote that sways towards the finalist who has the least amount of relationship damage in the house. So, jury votes are extremely important.
While competing on “Big Brother” offers incredible opportunities for fame and fortune, it also requires careful gameplay and strategic decision-making. Each season of “Big Brother” has shown the fans that sometimes the most aggressive player is not the one taking home the money on finale night.
Avoiding these top six mistakes will undoubtedly increase any contestant’s chances of success on this thrilling reality show.
